Takaoka City

Recognized in Japan as a city of history and heritage, Takaoka City was founded by the 2nd head of the Kaga Maeda family, Toshinaga, and ever since has been a center of artisan craftsmanship such as casting and lacquer ware.

Takaoka Kojo (Old Castle) Park

Built by Maeda Toshinaga in 1609. The castle was later dismantled, but the castle enclosures such as the moats and embankments remain from when the castle was built. It is the only castle in Toyama Prefecture designated as one of Japan’s Top 100 Castles, and has been designated a National Historic Site.

Zuiryuji Temple

Toshinaga’s family temple, and a famous temple of the Sōtō-school of Zen Buddhism. Established by Toshitsune, the expansive garan (temple compound) is the only remaining archetypal Zen style temple in Japan. Designated as a National Treasure in 1997.

Yamachosuji

Yamachō is a merchant’s area on the old Hokurikudo road, and covers 10 individual neighborhoods, each of which has its own mikurumayama festival float. After the great fire during the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the buildings were rebuilt in a fire-resistant style like kura storehouses, with the walls covered in mud. The area is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, and the Sugano Residence is an Important Cultural Property.

Tomb of Toshinaga Maeda

Built by Toshitsune in 1646, on the 32nd anniversary of Toshinaga’s death. At the time, it included a double moat, the grave reached a height of 11.9 meters, and the cemetery spread across over 33,000 m2. Together with the Nodayama Cemetery in Kanazawa, it is designated as a National Historic Site.

Kanayamachi

The birthplace of the 400 year-old tradition of Takaoka casting. Cobblestones inlaid with copper flakes and the rows of houses in the sembongōshi (lattice of evenly spaced vertical timber bars) style create a harmonious, tasteful atmosphere. The area is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.

Takaoka Mikurumayama Museum

The Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, and this museum exhibits the floats of the Festival all year round. It is also recommended as a base for exploring the townscape on foot.
